Full course description

Description: How Zionism and Israel are defined determines value and relevance for any age cohort.  Have diaspora Jews swallowed what others insist is our story and responsibilities? If so, why? What legitimacy is there in applying or imposing American or European based values upon Israeli society. Look at three benchmark moments in Jewish/Zionist history: 1945-1949, the aftermath of the June 1967 war, and Egyptian-Israeli negotiations, can they be duplicated with the Palestinians?  Come away from this session with useful ideas about how to engage students in different understandings of Zionism.

Instructor: Professor Kenneth W. Stein teaches Middle Eastern History, Political Science and Israel Studies at Emory University. He is the Founding Director of the Emory Institute for the Study of Modern Israel and Founding President of the Center for Israel Education.

Intended Audience: Open to all.
