Full course description

Description: Recently, conversation between divergent groups has become increasingly toxic. We shall use text study as a tool in facilitating contentious conversations, and offer some methods to engage with one another in a fractious environment. Our case study will be the biblical story of a massacre perpetrated by Jacob's sons, as we question the legitimacy of lethal force, and other tough moral issues raised by this episode. We shall also introduce the 9th of Adar as a date in the Jewish calendar that offers an opportunity to promote healthy dialogue.

Instructors: Rabbi Alex Israel teaches Bible at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, where he serves as director of Community Education, Summer Programs, and the Elmad online learning platform.

Intended Audience: Open to all.
